Present Apostolate : Destitute Home for the old and mentally challenged women, Pastoral care

The Sisters of St. Charles started a new Mission on 4 th January, 2012 at Pope John XXIII Rehabilitation Centre Snehatheeram, Kidangara, Alappuzha, Kerala. This is a centre started for the destitute old and mentally challenged women by Rev. Fr. Francis Vaniyapurakal, a diocesan priest of Changanacherry Archdiocese. Fr. Francis’s vision was to have a “ROOF FOR THE ROOFLESS”. This centre is managed by a Trust comprising people of different religions. Sr. Annie Nedumkallel and Sr. Grace accompanied by Sr. Wilma, the then vice provincial, reached here on 4 th January 2012. They were given a warm welcome by Rev. Fr. Mathew Mattam and other 2 priests of the diocese and the Trust members. The building with16 rooms was constructed some 20 years ago. Due to financial and lack of personal problems, Father could not admit anyone. Sr. Preethy and Sr. Joyce Mathew, arrived by June 2012 after which, they started taking the inmates. In May 2015, Sr. Tessy was appointed as the Animator. On 8 th September 2012, on the 1 st death anniversary of Fr. Francis, the centre was officially inaugurated. By then the Sisters had obtained all the needed Government Permissions and registered the centre under the Orphanage Control Board. So far we have admitted 69 women – 28 of them are rehabilitated to their homes and 8 of them expired. Presently, we have 33 women ranging from 35 to 90 years of age; most of them are on psychiatric treatment. We help them to maintain good hygiene; teach them to pray, conduct yoga and also encourage them for gardening and manual work. A Psychiatrist and a Social worker visit the centre regularly. Many generous people come forward and contribute to the needs of the inmates. In the year 2017 with the help of some of our friends, we were able to modify the 1 st floor, with 3 halls and 3 single rooms. This was a providential plan to take care of the inmates during the floods of 2018. Only we were left in this vicinity during floods as the others around were taken to the camps. Many generous souls reached out to us during these hard times. The mission of compassion continues here with spirit of commitment and dedication of sisters.
